SHORYU, COVENT GARDEN – A Spoonful Of Sugar

Then a few weeks ago I found out that a new branch of Shoryu (their sixth) had opened in Covent Garden so I decided to try it out.
Shoryu specialise in authentic Hakata cuisine and this new site offers their signature Hakata tonkotsu ramen, Shoryu buns and Gekkeikan Royal Warrant Sake.
Shoryu’s Executive Chef, Kanji Furukawa, has created a special truffle ramen (£18), especially for the Covent Garden site, so of course we ordered that, as well as the Miso Wafu Chicken (£11.50).
The chicken ramen is made with Shoryu’s unique tonyu soy milk, white miso, shiitake mushroom & konbu soy broth, topped with fried chicken, kikurage mushrooms, nori seaweed, spring onion and ginger.
Sake features prominently on Covent Garden’s Shoryu’s drinks menu and includes a large range of Japanese inspired cocktails, made with sake, whisky and umeshu.

Shoryu Ramen is teaming up with Gudetama (Hello Kitty’s ‘lazy egg friend’) for Easter with an egg-themed menu.
At Shoryu Go you’ll be able to enjoy three courses plus a drink and a Gudetama keyring for £22, with Shoryu buns, Ganso Tonkotsu and White Natural ramens with extra Gudetama egg, and matcha and yuzu cheesecakes, also with an added Gudetama twist.
And if you can’t get enough of the little guy, there’ll be plenty of Gudetama merch for you to buy too.

Hoping to take advantage of London's seemingly bottomless desire for ramen, the growth of the Shoryu chain continues.
The space (which used to be the Umai sushi bar) promises Londoners their first dedicated tonkotsu ramen to go bar.
Apparently SHORYU go has developed some sort of unique preparation technique and dedicated packaging to ensure that the ramen's going to be high quality even if it's for takeaway.
If you like the other Shoryu ventures, the menu here will be familiar with a selection of Hakata tonkotsu including Piri Piri Tonkotsu, Tonkotsu Curry and their signature Shoryu Ganso Tonkotsu version.

There are now additional branches of Shoryu in Denman Street (a few steps from the current Japan Centre site), Kingly Court off Carnaby Street and Broadgate Circle just behind Liverpool Street station or a short walk from Moorgate.
Like Japan Centre, Shoryu has a strong focus on presenting real Japanese food to its customers, and certainly based on my two visits to Japan, it does a great job.
Recently, I heard about the extended robata menu – food cooked over a charcoal grill – in Shoryu’s newest Liverpool Street branch, and was keen to try.
Pete and I headed down after work one evening, determined to allow no ramen to pass our lips – tonight’s visit was all about the robata, with a few additional dishes for balance.
Of course, the ramen is super and hard to resist, but I would urge you to give some of the other items on the menu a try, and do visit the Liverpool Street branch for the robata grill items.
